ESPN's SportsCenter host Jay Harris has announced that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and is urging other men to get checked for the disease.
Harris, 60, shared the news during an appearance on Good Morning America, where he sat down with host Michael Strahan to discuss his diagnosis and prognosis.
"I was diagnosed with prostate cancer," Harris said. "I'm having surgery on Tuesday and I'll be away from SportsCenter for about a month to recover. And then I'm coming back better than ever."
Harris' doctor is "quite optimistic" about his prognosis, and Harris is hopeful that the cancer has not spread. "Per my last scan, nothing has spread, so once we take out the prostate, hopefully that will be it. That's the goal,'" Harris added.
Harris has received an outpouring of support from his colleagues, including fellow SportsCenter anchor Hannah Storm, who is in remission from breast cancer, and Brian Custer, who overcame prostate cancer.
Harris emphasized the importance of getting checked for prostate cancer, which affects roughly 13 out of every 100 men in the United States during the course of their lives, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Approximately 35,770 people die from prostate cancer each year in the U.S.
"We all need to talk about these things because we all have them in our families," Harris said. "By not talking about them, we just, really, I hate to be morbid, but we sentence ourselves to death by not talking."
Harris encouraged men to get checked, noting that prostate cancer can be detected through a simple blood test. "We need to get the message out," Harris said. "People need to know. We need to talk about it. It doesn't have to be a death sentence. For most folks, it is not."
