Broadway star Jonathan Groff has opened up about his personal milestone of turning 40 has shifted his perspective on life. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Groff shared that he no longer makes wishes on his birthday, instead opting to simply say "thank you" for the gift of life.

Groff, who is currently starring as Bobby Darin in the Broadway musical "Just in Time," says that the experience has been "meant so much" to him. The show, which has been nominated for six Tony Awards, including one for Groff himself, has been a labor of love for the actor.

Groff's performance in "Just in Time" marks the first time he has been instrumental in shaping the production from its earliest stages. He says that the experience has been "extra sweet" due to the nominations.

Groff's gratitude for life is echoed in his performance as Bobby Darin, whose life was marked by twists and tragedies. Groff hopes that the audience takes away the message that "life is short. Live it to the fullest while you can."

Groff's appreciation for the present moment is something he carries with him every night, both onstage and off. He says that "aging is complicated, and can be confronting. But to be here now is a gift. Every day is a gift."
