Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell has announced that he is "completely in remission" after a 12-year struggle with Hodgkin Lymphoma. Campbell, 62, shared the news during a SiriusXM interview, revealing that he's been through a series of treatments, including chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant.
The guitarist, who was first diagnosed in 2013, explained that he had to undergo a stem cell transplant with his own cells, which didn't work. He then had a donor transplant, which was successful. Campbell said he's "obviously overjoyed" and plans to thank his donor once he's allowed to meet him, as there are restrictions in place safeguarding his identity for a few years.
Overcoming a 12-Year Battle
Campbell, who joined Def Leppard on their 2024 summer tour, explained that he started doing more chemo in preparation for the transplant. He lost his donor less than two weeks before the scheduled transplant but was fortunate to find another one in December. He underwent the transplant on New Year's Eve and spent three and a half weeks recovering.
Campbell said he's grateful to his donor, who went through a tough process to help him. "I don't get to know who he is for a couple of years," Campbell said, adding, "I'm gonna buy him a beer — or two or three."
