Lainey Wilson is taking her fans on a wild ride with her latest video for "Somewhere Over Laredo." The country star channels her inner Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz in a trippy, whimsical visual that's equal parts western and fantasy.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Wilson revealed that the idea behind the video was to pay homage to the classic, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," which inspired her song. "It was important for me to kind of draw the parallel between the songs," she said.

The video, which features Wilson's French Bulldog, Hippie Mae Wilson, takes viewers on a fantastical journey through cotton candy skies, fields, and deserts. Wilson said she had the time of her life making the video, which pushed her out of her comfort zone. "I was doing all kinds of things, pretending to be falling through the air, the sky, and all of these crazy things that I had never done before," she said.

The song, which is featured on her 2024 album Whirlwind, has become her biggest streaming debut. Wilson said she's thrilled to see how people are connecting with it. "I felt like it was special the moment we finished it. I felt it in my spirit that the songwriter was going to take people to a nostalgic place, and I'm so glad that my gut was right because it seems like people are latching onto it and connecting to it," she said.

Wilson's deluxe edition of Whirlwind" is set to drop on August 22, and she's already working on her next project. She revealed that she's been writing songs and is inspired by the feeling of finally getting her feet under her. "I still feel like every single day I'm learning how to navigate life and trying to pay attention to the things that bring me that peace," she said.

As for collaborations, Wilson said she'd love to work with Miley Cyrus, Chris Stapleton, and Eric Church. She's also excited about her boot line, Golden West, which features a popular "Somewhere Over Laredo" boot that ties in with the song.
