Former Ohio State Football Player Kirk Barton Charged with Aggravated Vehicular Homicide Following Fatal Car Crash

A former Ohio State football player has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide following a fatal car crash that occurred on Saturday, June 21.

Kirk Barton, 40, was driving a pickup truck at a "high rate of speed" when it hit a Lexus traveling eastbound on U.S. 33/S.R. 161 in Dublin, Ohio, according to a news release from the city of Dublin. The driver of the Lexus, 24-year-old Ethan Wence Perry, died at the scene.

Barton sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was taken into custody after being released from Riverside Methodist Hospital. He is set to appear in Franklin County Municipal Court on Monday, June 23, and has been charged with one count of aggravated vehicular homicide.

The crash resulted in the shutdown of West Bridge Street and North High Street in both directions, as well as the westbound S.R. 161/Riverside Drive roundabout. All roadways were reopened by 10:15 a.m.

Barton played as an offensive lineman for the Ohio State Buckeyes football team from 2003 to 2007 and was a team captain in 2007. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL draft and later played for multiple other teams.

According to Franklin County Municipal Court records, Barton has a history of traffic offenses. The former college football player has been heartbroken over the incident, with Buckeye Scoop writing on X, "We are heartbroken for Ethan Perry and his loved ones. This is a tragedy."
