A devastating incident occurred at the 5 July 1962 Stadium in Algiers, Algeria on Saturday, June 21, when a barrier in the upper stands gave way, causing fans to fall into the lower tier of the arena. The tragedy resulted in three fatalities and over 70 injuries, according to the Algerian Ministry of Health.
The incident took place during a soccer match between Mouloudia Club d'Alger and another team, as the home team won the league title. The stadium was packed with excited fans, but the joyous atmosphere quickly turned to horror as the barrier collapsed.
The Ministry of Health confirmed the incident on Facebook, stating that 38 injured people were treated at the Beni Messous University Hospital, while 27 were treated at Ben Aknoun Hospital, and 16 at Bab El Oued Hospital. Three deaths were also reported.
The soccer club, MC Alger, mourned the loss of one of their fans, Younes Amgozi, who passed away due to the incident. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) also issued a statement, extending their condolences to the families of the victims and the Algerian government.
CAF president Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives and injuries sustained by the football spectators. "We wish those who were injured a speedy recovery and pray to Allah to be with them, the families who lost their loved ones, and the people of Algeria," Motsepe said.
