A new book, "Desi Arnaz: The Man Who Invented Television," by Todd S. Purdum, has resurfaced the tumultuous relationship of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, including their brief but invalidated divorce.
The couple's relationship was far from traditional, with both Ball and Arnaz already in relationships with other people when they started their romance. Ball was engaged to director Al Hall, while Arnaz was dating dancer Renee De Marco.

According to Purdum, the couple's first night out was "chaste" due to Arnaz's girlfriend arriving in town that night. However, days later, Arnaz took his girlfriend to a party, where they ran into Ball, and the rest is history.
Ball and Arnaz eventually married in 1940, but their relationship was marked by frequent fights and Arnaz's numerous affairs. By the summer of 1944, Ball had had enough and filed for divorce.

In a surprising twist, Ball sought solace from De Marco, Arnaz's old girlfriend, who had since remarried and become a friend of Ball's. However, just before the divorce was set to be finalized, Arnaz called Ball and invited her to a farewell dinner, where they ended up spending the night together.
The next morning, Ball rushed to court to finalize the divorce, but since she had spent the night with Arnaz, the divorce was invalidated under California law, which had a one-year period banning cohabitation after a provisional decree.
The couple eventually reconciled and went back to their Desilu ranch, with Arnaz starting to come home on the weekends.
