Allison Williams Says 'Girls' Didn't Have an Intimacy Coordinator: 'It Would Have Been So Helpful'

Allison Williams, who played Marnie Michaels on the hit HBO series 'Girls', has revealed that the show did not have an intimacy coordinator during its run from 2012 to 2017.

In a recent interview on the 'Not Skinny But Not Fat' podcast, Williams discussed the importance of intimacy coordinators on set, stating that having one on 'Girls' would have been "so helpful".

"We didn't have them yet on Girls," Williams said. "It wasn't the time for that?" podcast host Amanda Hirsch asked. "It definitely was, but we didn't have them," Williams quipped in response.

Williams, who was involved in numerous sex scenes throughout her run on the show, recalled that the task of choreographing those scenes fell to show creators Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner. She shared a memorable story about one particular scene where Dunham and Konner acted out the moment where her co-star Ebon Moss-Bacharach's character Desi was going down on her.

"I have this picture of Lena and Jenni acting out the moment where Desi was going down on me — eating my ass — and I have a picture of them where I think it's Jenni is leaning over a windowsill and Lena is leaning behind her like smiling being like, 'This is what we picture,'" Williams said. "And I was like, 'Great!' but they were busy. That should have been someone else's job."

Dunham, who created, directed, and starred in the hit series, previously expressed her wish for having an intimacy coordinator on the set of 'Girls'. "I know as an actor sometimes you feel anxious going to the director with a concern, even if you really like them, you just don't want to be the party pooper — you just have your own self-consciousness and to have a person there who is devoted to that dialogue and your comfort, I mean, I would have loved to have it on Girls," Dunham said in a 2022 interview with Metro UK.

Williams' comments come as the importance of intimacy coordinators on set has become a growing topic of discussion in the entertainment industry. Having an intimacy coordinator can help ensure a safe and comfortable environment for actors during sensitive scenes.

All six seasons of 'Girls' are streaming in full on Max.
