André Aciman, the renowned author of "Call Me By Your Name" and "Out of Egypt", sat down with John Turturro at the 92nd Street Y in New York City on June 24 to discuss his new book, "Room on the Sea". The conversation delved into Aciman's approach to writing characters, his affinity for Italy, and his fascination with Elizabeth Bennet from Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice".

Writing Characters: Understanding and Experimentation

Aciman emphasized the importance of wanting to understand his characters, citing his protagonists from "Call Me By Your Name" as examples. He explained that while he can't fully understand Oliver, he can relate to Elio's sensibility and ruminations. Aciman also highlighted the value of experimentation in fiction, allowing him to explore a character's personality and situation.

However, not all literary characters resonate with Aciman. He expressed his disinterest in Vladimir Nabokov's "Lolita", stating that the novel doesn't hold his attention.

A Fascination with Elizabeth Bennet and Italy

On the other hand, Aciman confessed his admiration for Elizabeth Bennet, praising her intelligence and attractiveness. He expressed his desire to write a story about her, driven by his curiosity to know her better.

Italy, a central location in many of Aciman's books, including his 2024 memoir "Roman Year", also holds a special place in his heart. He appreciates the country's emphasis on pleasure and living life to the fullest, admitting that he's still learning to do so himself.

New Book: "Room on the Sea"

Aciman's latest book, "Room on the Sea", is a collection of three novellas that explore the connections between various individuals in places like New York and the Amalfi Coast. The stories feature a diverse range of characters, including a nun, an alluring hotel guest, and two strangers brought together by jury duty.
