Aaron Sorkin, the Oscar-winning writer of the 2010 film about the origins of Facebook, is reportedly helming a follow-up with Sony. The Social Network Part II is in the works, drawing inspiration from The Wall Street Journal's revealing 2021 reporting on Facebook, known as The Facebook Files.

Sorkin, 64, will write and direct the project, which explores the latest developments in the social media platform's history. The original film, directed by David Fincher, explored the origins of Facebook and starred Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg, Andrew Garfield as Eduardo Saverin, and Armie Hammer in a dual role as the Winklevoss twins.

There is no word on whether Eisenberg and his co-stars would reprise their roles in the sequel. Much has changed for Facebook since the original film's release, including controversial changes to its content moderation protocols and community standards across Facebook and Instagram. Mark Zuckerberg, 41, has become the world's third wealthiest person, according to Forbes.

The Wall Street Journal's reporting on Facebook, which Sorkin is drawing inspiration from, exposed the inner workings of the platform, leaking internal documents in 2021. Fincher, who directed the original film, described the notion of a sequel as "a can of worms" in a 2023 Guardian interview. Sorkin told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021 that he felt open to collaborating with Fincher again.

"I think what has been going on with Facebook these last few years is a story very much worth telling, and there is a way to tell it as a follow-up to The Social Network, and that's as much as I know," Sorkin said at the time.
