It's a moment that will go down in history! Jonathan Roumie, the American actor who plays Jesus Christ on the popular TV series The Chosen, met Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope in the history of the Catholic Church, during the pontiff's general audience in Vatican City on Wednesday, June 25.
The pope shared a photo of the moment on his Instagram, showing Roumie taking a selfie with him. The caption read, "Every time we perform an act of faith addressed to Jesus, we grow in our connection with Him, and His grace is bestowed immediately."
Roumie had expressed his excitement about meeting the pope during a press conference on Monday, saying, "The fact that we're here now, sitting at the Vatican… is a testament to, I think, how God wants to continue to further this mission to bring more people to Jesus and bring Jesus to them."
The actor also shared his emotional response to meeting the pope, saying, "When [Pope Leo XIV] was elected, I wept, because I never thought I'd see an American pope in my lifetime."
Roumie's show, The Chosen, has been a huge success, boasting nearly 300 million viewers worldwide. The show is currently streaming its fifth season, with two additional seasons on the way to wrap up Jesus' story.
