Brady Martin, the 18-year-old NHL draft prospect, is expected to be among the top picks in the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft. But unlike most hockey players, Martin's summer workout routine doesn't involve hitting the gym or the rink. Instead, he's tending to dairy cows, cleaning barns, and fixing broken farm equipment on his family's farm in Elmira, Ontario.
"I enjoy it," Martin tells PEOPLE. "I always come back home and work on the farm for a bit, have a good summer and just live my life a bit between seasons."
Martin's unique skill set, which blends his offensive skills with an unteachable work ethic and strength that comes from his rural upbringing, has caught the attention of several NHL teams, including the newly minted Utah Mammoth hockey club and the Philadelphia Flyers.
"I'm a physical forward and play hard," Martin says. "If you're in my way, I'll run you over."
Martin's love for hockey started alongside his siblings, watching Pittsburgh Penguins games and emulating their favorite players on a "huge" pond on the family's farm that still freezes over each year. But during the summer months, hockey takes a backseat to the family business – the farm.
The farm has been in the family since Martin's grandfather took it over, and now Martin and his siblings are next in line to keep it going. Martin tends to over 250 cows and recently auctioned off some of them on behalf of his family while stepping out between bids to do interviews on the phone about the NHL Draft.
Despite the demands of playing junior hockey with the Soo Greyhounds in the Ontario Hockey League, Martin has managed to balance his love for hockey with his commitment to the farm. And now, as he prepares to take the next step in his hockey career, Martin is excited about the prospect of playing in the NHL while still maintaining his connection to the farm.
"For a while, it was mostly just farming and just getting that farm strength in me," Martin says. "It was all kind of raw, but last year and this year, I started to focus a bit more on hockey and training and taking it a bit more seriously."
On Thursday, friends and family will join Martin at the Martin house to watch the draft after another daytime shift around the farm. If all goes as expected, the next day he'll be doing the same chores but now as an official NHL player.
