Parker McCollum's self-titled album is now available, and the country music star is kicking off his headlining tour. Despite his recent success, including No. 1 singles "Pretty Heart" and "To Be Loved By You," McCollum remains humble and focused on his craft.

"I say all the time, 'I'm still trying to make it.' I think that will always be the mentality," McCollum tells PEOPLE. The 33-year-old singer-songwriter is grateful for his accomplishments, including becoming a father for the first time with his wife Hallie Ray Light, but he's not resting on his laurels.

McCollum's new album features a track called "Permanent Headphones," which he wrote when he was 16 and had been sitting on for years. The song was almost left off the album, but producers Frank Liddell and Eric Massey convinced him to include it.

Another standout track is "Solid Country Gold," which features lyrics about drugs and women. McCollum laughs off the attention, saying, "Somebody said recently, they're like, 'It's not a Parker album without a couple of cocaine references.'" He adds that he'll never reveal how much of his songwriting is based on fact or fiction.

When it comes to his music idols, McCollum looks up to country legend George Strait. "I'd be completely lying to you if I told you there wasn't still the part of me that's like, 'Yeah, George Strait,'" he says. "I think there's not going to be a lot of people in 50 years who still got it all together like that man does." McCollum aspires to emulate Strait's reputation as a great family man, businessman, and musician.
