Warner Bros. and DC Studios have finally found their superhero salvation with James Gunn's "Superman," which has taken the top spot at the box office this weekend.

The film, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, has grossed a whopping $122 million in the U.S. and Canada, with a global total of $217 million.

Despite facing stiff competition from other blockbusters like Universal's "Jurassic World Rebirth" and Apple and Warner Bros.' "F1 The Movie," "Superman" has managed to shine bright, thanks to mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.

The movie has received an "A-" grade from polling firm CinemaScore and a 93% positive audience rating from Rotten Tomatoes, indicating that fans are loving the new take on the iconic superhero.

Industry analysts had projected an opening weekend of $130 million, but the actual numbers fell slightly short, attributed to the heavy competition in the marketplace.

However, the success of "Superman" is crucial for Warner Bros. and DC Studios, which have struggled in recent years to produce consistent superhero hits. The film's performance is key to a planned reboot and refresh of the DC universe.

Gunn and producer Peter Safran were named co-chairmen and co-chief executives of DC Studios in 2022 to help turn around the Warner Bros.-owned superhero brand after a years-long rough patch.

The new film is intended to kick off a new epoch for DC Studios, which has struggled to produce consistent superhero hits in recent years. With "Superman," Gunn and Safran are hoping to create a cohesive vision and framework for its superhero universe, similar to Marvel's successful formula.
