Michael McStay, a renowned British actor known for his roles in Doctor Who and No Hiding Place, has passed away at the age of 92. McStay was remembered as "an actor of the highest standing, talented writer and family man" by his representative in a statement.
McStay's death was announced on Facebook on May 20, and according to The Daily Mail, he died in his sleep following lunch with his children on May 18. He is survived by his wife, actress Jennifer Clulow, and their two sons.
McStay's rise to fame began with the role of Sergeant Perryman on the ITV detective series No Hiding Place, where he appeared in over 80 episodes. He also starred in two episodes of BBC's Doctor Who, playing the role of Derek Moberley.
In a May 2024 interview on the Doctor Who: Toby Hadoke's Time Travels podcast, McStay shared his appreciation for the beloved show's fans, saying, "The sort of fans that you get on a show like Doctor Who are your friends. They want to like you, they want to like the show. It's a great feeling."
McStay also landed roles in films including Robbery in 1967 and The Stick Up in 1977. On the small screen, he also appeared on The Black Arrow, Park Ranger, Spy at Evening, EastEnders, and Ted and Alice.
During the podcast appearance, McStay reflected on having staying power in the entertainment industry, saying, "You have to want to do it. I've always wanted to do it. And I had some good friends along the way that helped me."
McStay's final on-camera appearance came in ITV soap Coronation Street, on which he took over the role of Alan Hoyle from John Woodvine in 2011.
