Shaquille O'Neal brought the laughs and a sweet challenge to the Today show on Friday, May 23. The retired NBA star offered co-anchor Craig Melvin a staggering $1 million cash if he could eat a giant bowl of SHAQ-A-LICIOUS XL Gummies in 30 seconds.
The unexpected bet was part of their ongoing friendly competition, which O'Neal jokingly described as a rivalry. "Every time we see each other, we have a competition, and I beat him, and he just gets mad," O'Neal said, adding that Melvin sends him "rude emails, threatening emails."
Melvin, 46, laughed off the invitation, despite the tempting offer. O'Neal even joked that he could walk Melvin to a nearby Bank of America to collect his prize if he succeeded.
Shaquille O'Neal's Netflix Docuseries and Reebok Projects
O'Neal was on the show to promote his Netflix docuseries, Power Moves, which documents his behind-the-scenes projects with Reebok. When asked if he would bring back the iconic '80s-era Reeboks with an air pump button on the shoes' tongues, O'Neal humorously replied, "Yes, we are, and you won't get a pair."
Co-host Savannah Guthrie summed up the chemistry between O'Neal and Melvin, saying, "I'm here for this, I'd like a TV show out of this."
