Retton has spoken publicly about her struggles, saying that she was so sick that at one point, the doctors told her four daughters she might not make it. She has also spoken about the experience has left her with scarred lungs and relying on daily oxygen.
Retton is a former Olympic gymnast and the first American woman to win a gold medal in individual all-around gymnastics. She has also appeared on Dancing with the Stars, where she spoke about her health struggles.
