Tina Knowles, the mother of Beyoncé, has shared a heartwarming anecdote about the time she cut her own hair to save the day on Destiny's Child's "No, No, No (Part 2)" music video shoot in her new memoir, "Matriarch."
The incident took place during the video shoot in Los Angeles, where Tina was serving as the hairstylist for the group, which comprised of Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and LeToya Luckett. Darren Grant directed the video, while Chris Maldonado and Eric Ferrell handled the makeup.
Tina recalled that Beyoncé wanted to have highlights for the first time, and Tina had to use her own light blonde hair to create fake platinum blonde streaks for Beyoncé's hair. But when Tina realized she didn't bring enough hair, Beyoncé referred to her as her "mama," which changed the demeanor of the makeup artists, Maldonado and Ferrell, who confessed they were initially going to be mean to her until they found out she was Beyoncé's mother.
Tina then came up with a last-minute solution, cutting some highlights from her own hair to glue into Beyoncé's hair, without leaving herself bald-headed. Maldonado and Ferrell praised Tina, saying that only Beyoncé's mom would cut their own hair to complete a look.
The music video for "No, No, No (Part 2)" featuring Wyclef Jean was a breakthrough hit for Destiny's Child, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the publication's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Tina's memoir, "Matriarch," is out now.
