Pro Cyclist Alessio Martinelli Suffers Frightening Accident During Giro d'Italia Race

Alessio Martinelli, a professional cyclist, suffered a terrifying fall from a 50-foot hill during the Giro d'Italia race on Tuesday, May 27. The incident occurred while Martinelli was making a turn on the wet streets of San Valentino, Italy.

Martinelli, 24, crashed on his bike and slid down the street, falling over a ravine with a 30-50 foot drop. The edge of the street had a railing to shield the drop, but Martinelli slid underneath and down the hill.

The Giro d'Italia official X account confirmed that Martinelli was involved in the crash and said "ambulances and the medical teams are by his side," shortly after it happened.

The cyclist was helped from the ravine and emergency services transported him on a stretcher to the hospital. In photos, blood can be seen around Martinelli's mouth.

Martinelli's team, VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè, provided updates on his condition, stating that he was conscious and stable. A later update revealed that medical examinations had ruled out fractures and the only trauma he suffered was to his chin and left buttock.

A photo of Martinelli in the hospital was shared, showing him giving a thumbs up while laying in a hospital bed with a bandage on his chin.

Fans and worried spectators wished Martinelli a speedy recovery, with many agreeing that it's "a miracle" that the cyclist didn't suffer more severe injuries.
