Academy Award-winning actress Marlee Matlin is set to bare her soul in an emotional new documentary, Not Alone Anymore, which chronicles her remarkable life and trailblazing career as a Deaf actress.
The documentary, directed by Shoshannah Stern, features intimate sit-downs with Matlin's including director Aaron Sorkin, actor Troy Kotsur, and writer-producer Sian Heder, among others.
In the trailer, Matlin reflects on her early days, including her breakout role in the youngest and first Deaf winner of the Best Actress Oscar for Children of a Lesser God. "Okay, so you never saw a Deaf actor win an Oscar? Okay, I'll prove it to you that I belong here in Hollywood," Matlin says.
Matlin also opens up about her advocacy for the Deaf community, including her fight for cultural representation onscreen and her push for closed captioning on television in the 1980s.
The documentary premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and will next play at the Tribeca Film Festival, followed by a New York City release on June 20 and then Los Angeles on June 27.
Director Shoshannah Stern said, "I knew that to do justice to Marlee's legacy and her extraordinary life, I needed to make this film an immersive one."
Matlin added, "I'm so excited to have audiences share in my journey and get it directly from my hands! It's real and it's raw, and despite the barriers out there, anyone watching, Deaf or hearing, can identify."
