Adapted from Peter Brown's No. 1 New York Times bestselling book of the same name, the animated film "The Wild Robot" has left fans in tears, especially during the final scenes.
The film follows ROZZUM unit 7134, "Roz" for short (voiced by Lupita Nyong'o), who is shipwrecked on a remote island. As she struggles to the natural environment, she befriends a few local creatures, including a fox named Fink (Pedro Pascal), a possum named Pinktail (Catherine O'Hara), a beaver named Paddler (Matt Berry), and an elderly goose named Longneck (Bill Nighy). When an orphaned baby goose named Brightbill (Kit Connor) imprints on her, she adopts him as her own.
As the corporation that created her sends robots to erase her memory, Roz's animal family fights back, triggering an explosion that threatens their home. In the aftermath, the robot makes a heart-wrenching sacrifice to protect the ones she loves.
How did The Wild Robot end?
After tracking down Roz's location, Universal Dynamics, the company that created her, dispatches a retrieval robot named Vontra (Stephanie Hsu) to capture her. Roz refuses to comply, and Vontra unleashes an army of RECO robots to apprehend her.
When the island's animals unite to defend their robot, Vontra triggers the self-destruction function of the damaged RECOs, which ignites a massive forest fire. Amidst the chaos, Roz is captured and transported onto a dropship.
What happened to Brightbill?
Brightbill successfully infiltrates the vessel on which Roz is being held hostage, only to find that she has already been deactivated. But his expression of love reactivates her, and together they destroy Vontra and escape the dropship just before it crashes.
What happened to Roz?
The film ends with a time-jump that shows Roz working in a human fruit grove, having reintegrated back into society. Brightbill arrives at the grove to see what has happened to his mother, and if she's been reset.
After a tense moment of uncertainty, Roz recognizes her son and they embrace, proving that their love can endure all.
Will there be a sequel?
Director Chris Sanders confirmed in an October 2024 interview with Deadline that a follow-up to The Wild Robot was indeed in the works.
"100% yes, there are absolutely plans for a second one," he said. This isn't surprising, given that Brown's series already includes three books — and the author told PEOPLE in February 2025 that he wasn't "quite done" with the robot.
"I'll probably do at least one more novel, maybe two," Brown shared. "I have an idea for one that I'm pretty excited about. Who knows, maybe there'll be more."
The second book, The Wild Robot Escapes, follows Roz as she ventures into a futuristic world filled with humans and other robots while grappling with her island past, according to Brown's website.
Whether or not the film sequel will adapt this story remains to be seen.
