Jason Collins, the former NBA star who made history as the first openly gay player in the league, has tied the knot with his partner, film producer Brunson Greene. The news was announced on social media by friends and family, including actress Octavia Spencer, who shared a photo of the couple walking down the aisle.
Collins, 46, played in the NBA, including stints with the New Jersey Nets and Atlanta Hawks, and appeared in two NBA Finals. Greene, 57, is a film producer who earned a Best Picture Oscar nomination for The Help, starring Spencer and Viola Davis, in 2012.
Collins made headlines in 2013 when he became the first openly gay NBA player, sharing his story in a Sports Illustrated open letter. In the article, he wrote, "I didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation."
The couple's wedding was an intimate outdoor ceremony, and friends and family shared photos and congratulations on social media. Davis commented, "Aaaaahh!!!! Congratulations 🙏💕🙏." The former basketball pro reshared a group picture posted by Ngoc Nguyen on Friday, May 30, captioning it, "Our tight-knit group of friends who are family just got a little bigger… we love you so @jasoncollins_98. Thanks for bringing him into our lives @brunsong. You two are the best of the best."
Collins has been open about his journey to coming out as gay, saying that he first had thoughts about it during the 2011 NBA player lockout. He initially dated women and even got engaged, thinking it was the right thing to do. However, after seeing his former roommate march in Boston's 2012 Gay Pride Parade, he realized he couldn't hide anymore and wanted to take a stand for tolerance, acceptance, and understanding.
Since coming out, Collins has often shared pictures of his life with Greene on social media. The pair's most recent pictures together on Collins' page are from Christmas time in New Orleans.
