Summary:
In a near future, normal life on Earth has been decimated. Paul and his twin teenage sons, Thomas and Joseph, live a tranquil existence by day but are tormented by fear each night when ferocious creatures hunt and devour all living souls in their path. When Thomas doesn't make it home before sundown, Paul must leave the safety of their fortified farm to find him, setting off a desperate race against time and monstrous threats.
Review:
Arcadian delivers a tense and atmospheric post-apocalyptic creature feature anchored by a surprisingly grounded performance from Nicolas Cage. While the setup might feel familiar, the film excels with its practical creature effects, claustrophobic night sequences, and the compelling dynamic between the father and his two distinct sons. It blends survival horror with a coming-of-age story effectively, focusing on family bonds under extreme duress. It's a lean, mean thriller that makes the most of its premise and setting.
Audience Recommendation:
Recommended for fans of post-apocalyptic thrillers, creature features, and survival horror. Viewers who enjoyed films like 'A Quiet Place' or 'It Comes at Night' for their atmosphere and family focus will likely appreciate Arcadian, especially those interested in seeing Nicolas Cage in a more dramatic, protective father role.
Themes:
The film explores themes of parental sacrifice, the complexities of family bonds under pressure, coming-of-age in a hostile world, the primal instinct for survival, and the fear of the unknown lurking in the darkness.
Fun Facts:
• Director Benjamin Brewer previously worked as a visual effects artist, notably on the Oscar-winning film 'Everything Everywhere All at Once'.
• The film was shot on location in Ireland, utilizing the landscape to enhance the feeling of isolation and the stark contrast between day and night.
• Despite playing twins, actors Jaeden Martell and Maxwell Jenkins are not related in real life but developed a strong brotherly chemistry for their roles.
