In a shocking turn of events, comedy legend Lucille Ball discovered she was pregnant while listening to a live radio broadcast in 1950. According to a new book, "Desi Arnaz: The Man Who Invented Television" by Todd S. Purdum, Ball was on tour with her husband Desi Arnaz when she learned about her pregnancy in between shows.
The broadcaster, Walter Winchell, had been tipped off by a medical lab staffer before the Arnazes themselves had learned the news. This revelation came as a surprise to Ball, who was 39 years old at the time and had been trying for a baby.
Unfortunately, Ball suffered a miscarriage just weeks later. However, she eventually became pregnant again and gave birth to Lucie in 1951 and Desi Jr. in 1953. The couple's children, Lucie and Desi Jr., have spoken about their parents' relationship, describing how different they were.
Recalled how her mother "took it personally" when one of the children would disappoint her, while Desi was loud but would quickly move on from his anger.
Despite their on-screen chemistry, the couple's relationship was tumultuous behind the scenes, with Desi Jr. describing their arguments as "not good for anyone."
