Quinta Brunson, the creator and star of the hit TV show Abbott Elementary, has spoken out about her recent divorce from her husband Kevin Jay Anik, and how she struggled with the news being made public before she was ready to share it.

In a recent interview with Bustle, Brunson explained that she hates it when her personal life is made public, and that she didn't announce her divorce. "I think people have this idea that people in the public eye want the public to know their every move. None of us do. I promise you," she said.

Brunson filed for divorce from Anik in March after three years of marriage, citing "irreconcilable differences" according to court documents. The pair got married in October 2021 and their date of separation was listed as "TBD."

The actress also spoke about how she has learned to overlook unwarranted opinions from people who don't actually know her. "Those are invisible voices that aren't in your home with you, that aren't in your personal life, that aren't your friends," she noted.

Brunson also talked about her recent big chop, which followed a long internal debate about the impact a new look might have on her reputation. "When I finally cut it off, there was something very liberating about it," she said. "You can still change and evolve and start over. Cutting my hair helped remind me that I am an artist first. I want to feel things. I want to do things. I want to make choices. I want to be a person, and not just stuck in having to be a certain way for business."

Looking ahead, Brunson said she is focusing on putting herself first. "It's a transitional time," she acknowledged. "I think it's true for me and my personal life, and it's how I feel about myself, my career, and the world. I feel very serious about focusing on watering my own gardens, taking care of myself and the people around me who I actually interact with day-to-day."
