Lizzo has spoken out about the emotional toll of facing a sexual harassment lawsuit from her former backup dancers in 2023. In a recent cover story with Women's Health, the 37-year-old singer revealed that she became "very paranoid and isolated" after the lawsuit was filed.
"I got very paranoid and isolated," Lizzo told the publication. "I used to walk into glam and be like, 'Oh, let me tell you about this crazy s--- that happened last night!' I couldn't do that anymore. I pushed everyone away. I wasn't even talking to my therapist. I wasn't present. I wasn't open. I wasn't myself anymore."
Lizzo further explained how she felt during her darkest days, saying, "It got to the point where I was like, 'I could die.' I never attempted to kill myself or thought about it, but I did think, If everyone hates you and thinks you're a terrible person, then what's the point?"
The singer credits attending Beyoncé's Renaissance tour with helping her to turn her life around. "I was so nervous," she said. "I thought people would boo me or be like, f--- you." Instead, Lizzo was met with support, which made her realize that "life is worth living."
Background on the Lawsuit
In August 2023, three of Lizzo's former backup dancers - Crystal Williams, Arianna Davis, and Noelle Rodriguez - sued her for alleged sexual and racial harassment and a hostile work environment. The lawsuit claimed that Lizzo's Big Grrrl touring company treated the Black members of the dance team differently than other members.
Lizzo denied the allegations in an Instagram post, and last month, she appealed to overturn a ruling from 2024 that allowed the lawsuit to move forward. According to Billboard, claims including an allegation where Lizzo fat-shamed one of her dancers were thrown out, but the overall case was allowed to move forward.
