WNBA Investigates Alleged Racist and 'Hateful' Comments Towards Angel Reese

The WNBA is investigating claims that Chicago Sky star Angel Reese was the target of "hateful" and racist comments during a game against the Indiana Fever on Saturday, May 17.

The incident occurred during the third quarter of the game, when Fever phenom Caitlin Clark fouled Reese, leading to a confrontation between the two players. Clark was called for a flagrant 1 foul, and Reese was booed by fans as she shot free throws.

The IndyStar reported that Reese was the target of the alleged racist comments. The WNBA released a statement condemning racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms, and announced that they are looking into the matter.

Both the players' union and the arena's management also condemned the remarks. "The WNBPA is aware of reports of hateful comments at yesterday's game in Indianapolis and supports the WNBA's current investigation into this matter," a statement said. "Such behavior is unacceptable in our sports."

The WNBA stars have a history of being perceived as rivals, which extends to their clash in the 2023 women's Final Four. However, Reese has emphasized that their rivalry is not personal. "I don't think people realize it's not personal," Reese said last year. "Once we get out between those lines… if I see you walking down the street, it's like, 'Hey, girl, what's up? Let's hang out.' I think people just take it like we hate each other."
