Danny Glover and Mel Gibson have reunited ahead of the fifth installment of Lethal Weapon, nearly four decades after the first film.
The stars, who have played Los Angeles police detectives Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh since 1987, appeared together at Fan Expo Philadelphia over the weekend, marking their second reunion this year.
In the franchise, Gibson plays Martin Riggs, a reckless and suicidal detective who becomes a force to be reckoned with after being partnered with Roger Murtaugh (Glover), despite being "too old for this s---."
PEOPLE confirmed in November 2021 that Gibson would direct Lethal Weapon after director Richard Donner died at the age of 91. Gibson said Donner had given him his blessing to complete the next film "if I kick the bucket."
During an interview with ScreenRant at Fan Expo Philadelphia, Gibson gave a positive update on the fifth installment in the series, stating that he had done two or three drafts of screenplays and it came out pretty good.
"It's a lot of fun and got really emotional. And for some reason, the studios are having a lot of problems. I don't know what the deal is. I'm not sure what the problem is, but it is a really good screenplay," Gibson said.
Glover and Gibson also had a surprise reunion in February at MegaCon Orlando, where Gibson was onstage talking to the crowd when Glover emerged, causing fans to go wild with excitement.
The pair have starred in four Lethal Weapon films, including 1987's Lethal Weapon, 1989's Lethal Weapon 2, 1992's Lethal Weapon 3, and 1998's Lethal Weapon 4. Their chemistry paid off when they won an MTV Movie Award in 1993 for best on-screen duo for their work on the third film.
A release date for Lethal Weapon 5 has not yet been set.
