Showrunner Jenny Han has warned fans that the final season of The Summer I Turned Pretty will be "devastating and heartbroken" for viewers, as the series comes to a close. Han, who wrote the bestselling trilogy the show is based on, wants every audience member to have a "true show-watching experience" without knowing exactly what's to come.

Lola Tung, who plays Belly, said of the final season: "You're here to break hearts as much as fill hearts." The cast, including Gavin Casalegno (Jeremiah) and Christopher Briney (Conrad), are onboard with Han's changes.

The third and final season of the beloved series picks up two years after the dramatic conclusion to season 2, which saw Belly choose Jeremiah over Conrad. The new season finds Belly at the end of her junior year in college and "looking forward to another summer in Cousins with her soulmate, Jeremiah."

However, "her future seems set, until some core-shaking events bring her first love Conrad back into her life. Now on the brink of adulthood, Belly finds herself at a crossroads and must decide which brother has her heart," reads the official logline.

Han also revealed that she considered splitting the third and final book, We'll Always Have Summer, into two seasons because "there's a lot of story, and it covers a wide expanse of time."

Instead, Han settled on a longer final season, with 11 episodes instead of 8, as seasons 1 and 2 had. "We needed more canvas for the story, so that's how we ended up with 11 episodes. But yeah, three books, three seasons. It feels right to me."

Season 3 of The Summer I Turned Pretty premieres July 16 on Prime Video.
