Katy Perry has once again captured attention surrounding the Met Gala, not by walking the famed steps, but through the power of artificial intelligence. The singer shared AI-generated images of herself supposedly at the 2025 Met Gala, continuing a trend from the previous year.

AI Takes Center Stage for Perry's Met Gala "Appearance"

Following this year's Met Gala event, Katy Perry took to Instagram to post a series of digitally created photos depicting her "surprise appearance." In these fabricated images, Perry was shown "wearing" a pinstripe blazer with a distinctive side cut-out, revealing a futuristic black gown crafted from an unreal, liquid-effect, reflective material.

Perry clarified her absence in the post's caption, stating, "Couldn’t make it to the MET, I’m on The Lifetimes Tour (see you in Houston tomorrow IRL‼️)." She also humorously added, "P.s. this year I was actually with my mom so she’s safe from the bots but I’m praying for the rest of y’all."

This isn't the first time AI has placed Perry at the fashion event. Key points regarding Perry and AI at the Met Gala include:

  • Katy Perry posted AI-generated images of her at the 2025 Met Gala.
  • This follows a similar instance last year where AI-generated images of her went viral.
  • The singer confirmed she was not at the event due to her "Lifetimes Tour."

In 2024, an AI-generated image of Perry in an elaborate white gown adorned with flowers and moss detailing gained significant viral traction. The image was so convincing that it even fooled Perry's own mother, who messaged her, "Ha Feather! Didn't know you went to the Met. What a gorgeous gown, you look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float lol." Perry good-naturedly replied, "lol mom the AI got you too, BEWARE!"

Perry's last genuine appearance at the Met Gala was in 2022, where she donned a black ruffled bustle gown over a sculptural white mini dress, a creation by Oscar de la Renta.

From Virtual Galas to Actual Space Travel

While she may have missed the Met Gala this year, Perry recently embarked on a different kind of exclusive journey. Last month, on April 14, the singer was part of Blue Origin's 11-minute space flight. This extraterrestrial adventure, which saw Perry sing some Louis Armstrong while in orbit, also drew considerable online discussion and some criticism.

The trip, with an all-female crew, faced backlash for being perceived as tone-deaf, costly, and environmentally impactful. Perry addressed the criticism, stating, "When the ‘online’ world tries to make me a human Piñata, I take it with grace and send them love, cause I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much so a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed."
