Dana Carvey, the comedian who impersonated Joe Biden on Saturday Night Live during the 2024 presidential election cycle, has spoken out about the challenges of portraying the former president in a comedic light.
In a recent episode of his podcast, Fly on the Wall, Carvey revealed that he had to be careful not to offend or demean Biden, who is 82, due to concerns about his mental health. "I knew that he was compromised mentally, I mean, it was obvious. But it was a delicate thing in the comedy world," Carvey said.
Carvey, 70, went on to explain that he had to walk a fine line between making fun of Biden's mannerisms and speech patterns, while also avoiding any jokes that might be seen as disrespectful or hurtful. "If I can make Biden funny to everybody, then I am where I want to be," he said. "And to make it funny, it had to be recognizable. And so there were certain things I did not include in my package."
Carvey's impression of Biden was widely praised, with many praising his ability to capture the former president's distinctive voice and mannerisms. However, Carvey revealed that he had to be mindful of the fact that Biden is an older man and that his mental health has been a subject of concern in recent years.
Despite the challenges, Carvey said that he enjoyed playing Biden and found it to be a "surreal" and "bizarre" experience. He also praised his fellow cast members, including Andy Samberg, Maya Rudolph, and James Austin Johnson, who played Doug Emhoff, Kamala Harris, and Donald Trump, respectively.
Carvey's impression of Biden was not the only notable moment of his time on SNL. After the election, he transitioned to playing Elon Musk, making his debut in a cold-open sketch that saw the cast jokingly reveal they'd been supporting Trump throughout the whole election.
