Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora has come under fire for missing a game against the New York Mets to attend his daughter's college graduation. Cora, 49, has no regrets about putting family first, saying "I made the best decision for my daughter, and for those who don't understand, I'm not gonna try to convince them."
Cora's daughter Camila, graduated from Boston College, and he was criticized by local media for not attending the night game, which the Red Sox won. Cora pointed out that if the graduation were out of state, he would have had to take more than one game. He believes his daughter took precedence, saying, "She wanted me to be with her, and it was her day, so this is secondary."
One local radio personality, Mike Felger of Boston's 98.5 The Sports Hub, called Cora's absence "preposterous," suggesting that Cora could have attended the graduation and still made it to the game. However, Cora is unapologetic, saying, "I bet those people, they have families too, and at one point, they had to make decisions, too. And I bet they made decisions for the best of the family."
Cora's decision has sparked a debate about work-life balance and the importance of family events. As Cora said, "We're in this world for a purpose, right, and for me, it's to raise her, try to do the best we can. Obviously, it wasn't perfect, but right now, it's perfect."
The Red Sox won both games against the Mets, bringing their season record to an even .500.
