Ben Wang, a 25-year-old actor, recently opened up about his experience working on the new movie Karate Kid: Legends, which is set to hit theaters on May 30. Wang, who grew up a fan of the Karate Kid franchise, stars alongside Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio in the sixth installment of the beloved franchise.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, he shared a shocking injury he sustained on set, which left him with a sliced-off pinky finger. "I sliced off the tip of my pinky," Wang said. "They regenerate. Did you know your fingertips regenerate?"

The injury occurred while filming a stunt, where Wang had to perform a crazy spin on top of a table and catch himself in the end. "They wrap a wire around you and there's a giant, burly dude who yanks that thing," Wang explained. "It kind of scraped my finger and whacked it against the bottom of the table that had metal bracings."

The injury was quite bloody, but he's far from complaining. Wang pointed out that Jackie Chan once broke his fibula on set, and he's grateful his injury was just a minor one. I didn't break my fibula. I had an owie on my pinky."

Wang's enthusiasm for the project outweighed any fear of costarring with screen legends. "Jackie Chan, he was my first idea of what an actor is, as a kid is," Wang said. "The 2010 film was like perfection for me. Jaden Smith was so great in it."

Wang's aunt, a fan of the original Karate Kid and its sequels, even asked him to get Macchio's autograph when he was cast in Legends. "She showed all of them to me when I was in middle school, and it's a great franchise. It has a lot of goodwill. There are fans — and they're very adamant fans. So we want to make sure that we make a movie that serves them well."

Karate Kid: Legends, which costars Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley, Ming-Na Wen, and more, is in theaters May 30. Among Wang's other upcoming projects are The Long Walk (in theaters Sept. 12) and The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (in theaters Nov. 20, 2026).
