Orlando Bloom Initially Thought Pirates of the Caribbean Was a "Crazy" Idea

Orlando Bloom, the actor who played Will Turner in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, has revealed that he initially dismissed the movie as a "crazy" idea.

In an interview with L'Officiel, Bloom recounted how his agent told him that Disney wanted to make a movie based on a theme park ride, and he thought it was a crazy idea. However, fate, or at least an eager co-star, intervened.

Bloom was filming the 2003 movie Ned Kelly in Australia with actor Geoffrey Rush, who also starred in the Pirates franchise as pirate Hector Barbossa. It was Rush who convinced Bloom to take the role of Will Turner.

"Geoffrey Rush says I owe him 10 percent," Bloom told L'Officiel.

In the interview, Bloom also spoke about how he and co-star Johnny Depp fed off each other.

"At their core, Will and Captain Jack are similar. Will has heroic moments, but so does Jack," Bloom said, adding, "Will and Elizabeth Swann's relationship is the heart of the trilogy."

The film spawned four follow-ups, three directed by Gore Verbinski as part of a trilogy, and the remaining two as standalone sequels. The franchise became a billion-dollar hit at the worldwide box office, not once, but twice.

The films follow the adventures of sleazy yet skillful Captain Jack Sparrow as he embarks on different quests at sea along with a cackling ensemble of oddball pirates.
