NHL star Sean Monahan was left in tears after Johnny Gaudreau's wife, Meredith, surprised him with the Masterton Memorial Trophy, honoring his perseverance and dedication to hockey.
The emotional moment was captured on camera, with Meredith revealing that she had been honored to surprise Monahan with the award, given annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.
Meredith Gaudreau shared a heartfelt message with Monahan, saying, "Sean, you mean everything to John, so it's really special that I could be a part of this because this one's about you. You persevered through the hardest things, and you just lead by example."
Monahan, 30, was visibly emotional, breaking down in tears as he reflected on his friendship with the late Johnny Gaudreau, who tragically passed away in August 2024.
"Being a father, a husband, it's a special thing, and it's fresh right now, but definitely something I'm going to be reflecting on a lot," Monahan said, before breaking down in tears on camera.
Meredith Gaudreau said she felt that surprising Monahan at his home was the perfect tribute to Johnny, who loved surprises and pranking people.
The winner of the Masterton Memorial Trophy is selected in a poll of all chapters of the Professional Hockey Writers Association at the end of the regular season.
Monahan and his late teammate played nine seasons together for the Calgary Flames before reuniting briefly before Gaudreau's tragic death when Monahan signed with the Blue Jackets on July 1, 2024.
