A Los Angeles federal court witnessed a significant development in the investigation into the death of "Friends" star Matthew Perry on Wednesday morning. Dr. Salvador Plasencia, known to Perry as "Dr. P," pleaded guilty to four felony counts of ketamine distribution. The doctor supplied the drug to Perry through his live-in assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, who had already pleaded guilty to connected charges last year.
Dr. Plasencia's Role in Perry's Death
According to prosecutors, Dr. Plasencia sold ketamine to Perry for thousands of dollars, sometimes administering it in the back of cars in parking lots. The doctor's actions were deemed reckless, given Perry's history of addiction. Dr. Plasencia's lawyer, Karen L. Goldstein, stated that her client was "profoundly remorseful" for his role in supplying ketamine to Perry and hoped that his case would serve as a warning to other medical professionals.
Consequences for Dr. Plasencia
As part of the plea deal, Dr. Plasencia agreed to give up his medical license within the next 30 to 45 days. He faces up to 40 years in prison and $2 million in fines. The doctor will remain out on bail until his sentencing on December 3.
Dr. Plasencia's Calabasas urgent care clinic, which remains open, requires patients to sign waivers explaining the charges against him.
