Kristen Welker, the host of NBC's "Meet the Press," has been open about her infertility journey and surrogacy experience. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, she shared her story, saying that she was initially "terrified" to share it with the public.

Welker, 48, and her husband, John Hughes, 52, welcomed their first child, daughter Margot, in June 2021, with the help of a surrogate. The couple's second child, son John Zachary, was born in May 2024, also with the help of a surrogate. Welker shared that the decision to share her story was not an easy one, but it was important to her to be honest with her audience.

"I always try to draw a focus on the importance of resources, and my hope is also that, by having a conversation about infertility, we can find ways to increase resources for people who are struggling," Welker said.

Welker's journey with infertility began when she was 44 years old. She underwent IVF treatments but was told that the lining of her uterus was too thin to carry a child. The news was devastating, and Welker felt like a failure.

However, Welker and her husband decided to try surrogacy, and it was a successful experience. Welker shared that the surrogates who helped her have children are still a part of their lives, and they keep in touch regularly.

Welker's story has resonated with many, and she has received countless messages from those who have gone through similar experiences. She believes that sharing her story has helped her feel stronger and less alone.

Welker's interview with Olivia Munn, in which they discuss their experiences with infertility and surrogacy, will air on "Meet the Press" on Sunday, June 8.
