Debbie Gibson, the 54-year-old singer-songwriter, is gearing up to release her upcoming memoir, "Eternally Electric: The Message in My Music," on September 9. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Gibson shared her thoughts on writing the book, saying it's been a "cathartic and exhausting process."

Gibson, known for her chart-topping hits like "Foolish Beat" and "Lost in Your Eyes," explained that writing a book is a daunting task compared to songwriting. "Somebody said, 'Is it harder than writing a song?' I'm like, a song is 4 minutes, and a book is 90,000 words," she said.

Gibson's memoir is not just about her four-decade-long career in the entertainment industry, but also about inspiring her readers. "The motivation behind everything I do is to hopefully inspire people," she said. "I always felt like the girl who was like, people would say, 'Well, if you could do it, I could do it.' I hope they read this book and they say, 'Oh my God, you went through that? I went through that. And you turned that around. Great, I want to turn that around.'"

Gibson's book is expected to take readers on a journey through her life, with stops in the present and looking back at her past experiences. "I actually kind of set certain things around being at certain shows, and I've tried to take the reader on the journey with me," she teased.
