Quinta Brunson, the creator and star of the hit comedy series Abbott Elementary, has opened up about the possibility of ending the show to give her cast members the opportunity to take on other projects.

In a recent cover story with Bustle, Brunson explained that the show's success has been a blessing, but it also comes with a demanding shooting schedule that can limit her cast members' ability to pursue other projects. "We shoot about seven months out of the year. That can stop people from being able to do a lot of other things," she said.

Brunson, who plays the role of Janine in the series, wants to use the success of Abbott Elementary to get other people's projects off the ground. She's also looking forward to taking on a new role that's the opposite of what she's been doing on the show. "I'm always interested in playing against type," she said. "I think that's any actor's dream. Right now my type is 'Janine' and 'teacher.' I'm looking forward to moving away from that a little bit."

Abbott Elementary was renewed for season 5 earlier this year, and while Brunson hasn't set a specific timeline for ending the show, she's excited to see what the future holds. "Season 5, here we come! Join your favorite staff and students for more #AbbottElementary on ABC and stream on Hulu," the show's Instagram post read.

The cast members have previously expressed their love for the show, with Chris Perfetti telling PEOPLE in February 2024 that he's not in a rush to move on from his role. "Right now I'm feeling very attached to my Abbott family. It is a real gift to be able to play a character for as long as I've been able to be Jacob and these people are my family now — there was a connection from the get-go," he said.

Lisa Ann Walter also revealed to PEOPLE in October 2024 that the cast received salary increases ahead of the season 4 premiere. "Yes, we got a little more money in there and all the Hot Pockets we could eat," she quipped.
