Lena Dunham is getting candid about her life after the conclusion of her hit HBO series 'Girls' in 2017. In a recent interview, the 39-year-old star revealed that she took an "intentional break" from the public eye following the show's end.

"When the show ended, I didn't know what direction to move in. I wasn't young enough to be out and feeling fun and free," Dunham recalled.

Dunham's transition back to life after 'Girls' was rocky, with the star feeling "fatigued" after working on the show for five years. She also struggled with addiction to her anxiety medication, Klonopin, which led to a stint in rehab.

"I felt like all the maturing and changing that had been kept at bay by the experience of being in that cocoon of [Girls] was suddenly happening at a speed that was overwhelming," Dunham told The Times.

The break from acting was a necessary step for Dunham, who felt like she "didn't know how to mature" or "how to grow up" living in New York City. However, the break allowed her to focus on her personal life, including her marriage to Luis Felber and her health.

Now, Dunham is stepping back into the spotlight with her upcoming Netflix series, 'Too Much', which stars Hacks' Megan Stalter as a London transplant fresh off a breakup who finds herself unexpectedly drawn to the wrong guy (Will Sharpe). The storyline is somewhat autobiographical for Dunham, who moved to London in 2021 after splitting from Jack Antonoff and met and married Felber within six months.
