Miley Cyrus has opened up about a traumatic experience she had just days before hosting her New Year's Eve special, revealing that she suffered an ovarian cyst rupture.

The 32-year-old singer shared the news during an appearance on The Zane Lowe Show on Apple Music 1, saying that the medical emergency took place while she was preparing to host her Miley's New Year's Eve Party alongside her godmother Dolly Parton.

"I had a pretty traumatic experience on a show that I was doing with [Lorne Michaels] when I was doing my New Year's show," Cyrus said. "I had a medical emergency. I had an ovarian cyst rupture. We didn't know exactly what was going on, so we did it."

Cyrus described the experience as "extremely excruciating" and added that she did the show anyway, despite the pain and discomfort.

"It was pretty traumatic because it was extremely excruciating, and I did the show anyway," Cyrus said. "But it was really really hard on me."

Ovarian cysts are relatively common, with the Mayo Clinic stating that "many women have ovarian cysts at some time," and most "present little or no discomfort and are harmless."

However, large or ruptured cysts "can cause serious symptoms," including severe pelvic pain and bleeding, fullness or heaviness in the abdomen and bloating. In rare cases, a ruptured ovarian cyst may require surgery.

Cyrus is not alone in her experience, with other celebrities such as Hailey Bieber, Marsai Martin, Kate Beckinsale, Hilary Swank, Lena Dunham, and Olivia Culpo also sharing their own painful experiences with ovarian cysts.
