Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, the 56-year-old man accused of murdering Jonathan Joss, has been released from police custody after posting a $200,000 bond. According to records obtained by PEOPLE, Alvarez was released on June 2 and has been ordered to full house arrest.
Conditions of Release
The court has imposed several conditions on Alvarez's freedom, including a no-contact order, although it is unclear to whom the order applies. Alvarez is also prohibited from purchasing, possessing, owning, or using any firearms.
A pre-indictment hearing has been set for August.
The Tragic Incident
On June 1, a witness drove Joss and his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, to their property in San Antonio, Texas, to check their mail. The couple hadn't been living there because their house had burned down three months prior.
According to the police report, Alvarez, who was a neighbor of Joss, began arguing with Joss and allegedly said he had a gun and would shoot him before doing so. Officers responded to a call of a shooting in progress and found Joss lying near the roadway. He was pronounced dead at 7:20 p.m.
Alvarez was detained by police shortly after fleeing in a vehicle and allegedly told them, "I shot him."
Hate Crime Allegations
Gonzales has claimed that the incident was a hate crime, alleging that he and Joss had been harassed regularly by individuals who made it clear they did not accept their relationship. He also alleged that they found the skull of one of their deceased dogs seemingly left out for them to see when they arrived at the property, causing "severe emotional distress."
The San Antonio Police Department has addressed speculation that the shooting was tied to Joss' sexuality, stating that their investigation has found no evidence to indicate that Mr. Joss' murder was related to his sexual orientation.
