Billy Joel's first wife, Elizabeth Weber, has broken her silence on their marriage 43 years after their divorce. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the Tribeca Festival premiere of Billy Joel: And So It Goes, Weber opens up about how "great" it was for her to revisit that period of her life.
Weber, 76, credits her granddaughters for getting her involved with the project. She recalls being approached by the documentary's director, Susan Lacy, in a very personal way, which resonated with her, and Billy Joel's involvement in the project made her feel that it was the right thing to do.
The two-part documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes, premiered at the Tribeca Festival on Wednesday, June 4, and marks the first time Weber has spoken about their years together. Weber was married to Joel from 1973 to 1982 and was also his business manager. They have no children. Joel, 76, did not attend the premiere, has been married four times and has been married to Alexis Roderick since 2015.
Steve Cohen, the documentary's executive producer, tells PEOPLE that it was "crucial" that she was involved in the documentary. He worked hard to bring Weber together with Lacy and Levin, and he knew the story wouldn't be "complete" without her.
Weber's decision to participate in the documentary came as a surprise to many as she has kept a low profile since her divorce from Joel. She was once-"maligned" in the blogosphere, according to Cohen.
Billy Joel: And So It Goes details the "Vienna" singer's journey from his humble Long Island roots to international superstardom through exclusive footage with candid interviews.
Weber's involvement in the documentary was crucial to the project's success, and her participation has given fans a unique insight into her marriage to Joel.
