Domhnall Gleeson is speaking out about the comparisons between his new show, The Paper, and the popular sitcom The Office. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Gleeson shared his thoughts on the similarities and differences between the two shows.
A Whole New Character
Gleeson, who plays the role of Ned in The Paper, explained that his character is not similar to Michael Scott, the lovable but hapless boss played by Steve Carell in The Office. "I think if you're trying to compete with what Steve did or with what Ricky Gervais did, I think it would be a massive mistake," Gleeson said. "They are geniuses who are incredible in loads of different ways. We made a whole new character. And it's a whole new sort of set up, but I hope people will find a reason to love him as well, just in a different way than they did the guys before."
A New Take on the Mockumentary
The Paper, which is set to premiere in September on Peacock, is a documentary-style comedy about a dying Midwestern newspaper's reporters and its publisher's attempt to revive it. The show was created by Greg Daniels, who also worked on The Office. However, Gleeson emphasized that The Paper is not just a spinoff of The Office, but a unique take on the mockumentary genre.
Gleeson's Advice from John Krasinski
Last month, Gleeson revealed that he received advice from John Krasinski, who played Jim Halpert in The Office. "He was wonderful. I mean, his big advice that he gave me was to do it," Gleeson said. Krasinski's advice was simple but encouraging, and Gleeson appreciated the support.
Gleeson's Other Projects
In addition to The Paper, Gleeson is also starring in the Apple TV+ show Echo Valley, which premieres on June 13. The show focuses on a struggling mother, Kate (Julianne Moore), who makes efforts to reconcile with her troubled daughter Claire (Sydney Sweeney). Gleeson plays the role of Jackie, a complex character who has a distinct effect on the people in the film.
