A new documentary, Barbara Walters: Tell Me Everything, reveals the competitive side of the trailblazing journalist, who wasn't happy when ABC News hired the younger journalist to do similar sit-downs.

Walters, who broke barriers as the first female cohost of NBC's Today show and the first female nightly news co-anchor, felt intimidated by Sawyer's looks, calling her a "blonde goddess."

According to her friend Cynthia McFadden, Walters was "painfully insecure" and thought Sawyer was the ideal woman, someone she couldn't compete with physically.

McFadden says in the film, "She thought Diane was the ideal woman, and she couldn't compete with that. She could work harder. She could know more people. But she couldn't compete with the blonde goddess."

Walters' Insecurities Stemmed from Sexism in the Industry

Walters faced hurdles and sexism throughout her career, including being bullied by her male colleagues.

Despite her accomplishments, Walters felt insecure, especially when ABC News hired Sawyer to do similar sit-downs.

Walters' friend Victor Neufeld says in the film, "Barbara did not know why Diane was hired to start a new news magazine within our home of ABC to compete with 20/20. Barbara was unhappy."

Walters Paved the Way for Other Women in News

Despite the tension between Walters and Sawyer, Walters paved the way for other women in news, including Sawyer.

Walters once told Charlie Gibson that there was no feud between them, but they were just trying to get the same people for exclusive interviews.

Walters said, "I don't think Diane Sawyer and I had a feud. I think people know that we were after the same gets."
