In her new memoir, "Matriarch," Tina Knowles shares a remarkable encounter between her 5-year-old daughter Solange and the legendary rapper Tupac Shakur in 1991.
Solange had joined her mother and sister Beyoncé's girl group Girls Tyme (later Destiny's Child) on a trip to Sausalito, California, where they were set to record demos. Tina Knowles, 71, describes the "Losing You" musician, now 38, as a confident wanderer who was always going off on her own.
One afternoon, Knowles couldn't find Solange and found herself in a "panic" trying to find her throughout the halls and the bathroom. Eventually, she found Solange smiling ear-to-ear and holding court as two young guys, including Tupac, hung on her every word.
According to Knowles, Tupac, who was with Shock G at the time, smiled and called Solange "a trip." The late rapper, who was murdered in 1996, said, "She's really special."
Later, Beyoncé, 43, recognized Tupac after he found fame and joked that her sister was likely telling Tupac "all these stories about us."
