Retired Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton, has spoken out for the first time since her arrest for driving under the influence (DUI) in West Virginia on May 17.
In a statement to PEOPLE, the 57-year-old five-time Olympic medalist said, "I take full responsibility for my actions. What happened was completely unacceptable. I make no excuses. To my family, friends and my fans: I have let you down, and for that I am deeply sorry."
Retton, who was arrested after police responded to reports of a Porsche with a Texas license plate driving "all over the roadway" near downtown Fairmont, added, "I am determined to learn and grow from this experience, and I am committed to making positive changes in my life. I truly appreciate your concern, encouragement and continued support."
According to court documents, Retton was found in her car in a Marion County AutoZone parking lot with a screw-top bottle of wine in her passenger seat when officers approached her. Police claimed Retton was slurring her words while speaking with them at the scene and refused to have her blood tested for alcohol.
Retton was arrested on one count of "driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs; penalties." She was issued a personal recognizance bond of $1,500, which she posted that same day.
Retton, who shares four daughters with her ex-husband, Shannon Kelley, has been open about her health struggles in recent months. In October 2023, she was hospitalized and in the ICU with a form of pneumonia, and in July 2024, she revealed she still relied on daily oxygen.
