Roseanne Barr Claims She Was Asked to Guest Star in The Conners as 'a Ghost'

Roseanne Barr is speaking out about her experience with the sitcom The Conners, a spinoff of her original show Roseanne. In her new documentary, Roseanne is America, Barr claims that she was asked to guest star on The Conners after ABC canceled the revival of Roseanne in 2018.

Barr alleges that she was approached by the show's representatives, who asked her to return as a guest star, playing a ghost. Barr was outraged by the request, saying, "You're coming back as a ghost. You're asking me to come back to the show that you f------ stole from me and killed my ass, and now you want me to show up because you got s---- ratings and play a ghost."

Barr turned down the invitation to appear on The Conners, stating, "I'm gonna be bowling that f------ week."

ABC did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Barr co-created Roseanne, which originally aired from 1988 to 1997, with writer and producer Matt Williams. The show was revived in 2018, but was canceled after Barr sent a tweet likening former presidential advisor Valerie Jarrett to an ape.

After the cancellation, ABC ordered The Conners, which aired for seven seasons before coming to an end in April 2025. Barr's character was killed off due to an opioid overdose, which was a sensitive topic for Barr, as her former co-star Glenn Quinn, who played Becky's husband, actually died of an opioid overdose.

Barr's documentary, Roseanne is America, also explores her upbringing, early years in comedy, and Hollywood career. The documentary touches on the 2018 controversy and Barr's experience reuniting with her daughter, whom she placed for adoption when she was born.
