Gjert Ingebrigtsen, the father of Olympic gold medalist Jakob Ingebrigtsen, has been convicted of assaulting his daughter, Ingrid, in a Norwegian court.
The verdict comes after a months-long trial, where Gjert was acquitted of other charges brought against him, including allegations of abusing Jakob.
Gjert was found guilty of minor assault on one count, stemming from an incident in January 2022, where Ingrid claimed her father whipped her face with a towel, striking her on her cheek.
Gjert's lawyers, John Christian Elden and Heidi Reisvang, stated that the court's conclusion was based on the fact that there was no evidence that Gjert created a continuous fear in his children. They added that several close family members and outside witnesses had not seen or experienced abuse.
Jakob's lawyer, Mette Yvonne Larsen, described the verdict as "very strange" and stated that her client was "focused on moving forward" after the trial.
Gjert and Jakob became popular personalities in Norway through their documentary series, "Team Ingebrigtsen", which followed Gjert as he coached his sons in track-and-field.
The documentary series ran for five seasons until 2021. By 2022, the three brothers had accused their father of physical violence and intimidation in a column that ran in the national newspaper, VG.
Following the accusations, an investigation was opened, and Gjert denied the charges against him before the trial began in March.
Gjert was given a 15-day suspended prison sentence and is required to pay roughly $1,011 in compensation.
The court's verdict has sparked controversy, with Jakob's lawyer describing it as "very strange" and stating that her client found the verdict "very strange" after the trial.
