Javier Bardem has opened up about building a "bromance" with Brad Pitt on the set of their action-packed new movie F1. Pitt stars in the film as former Formula 1 driver Sonny Hayes, opposite Bardem as Ruben, the owner of the team Sonny drives for. F1 revs into theaters June 27.
Bardem, 56, quipped during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, "We knew each other very briefly, and then we have to create this bromance ... which, with Brad Pitt, is not that difficult, if you ask me."
He added of his costar's appeal, "It's like, 'Okay, I get it.'"
F1 stars Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a former driver "who returns to Formula 1 at APXGP, a fictional team on the grid," per a synopsis. He costars alongside Damson Idris, who plays his teammate, and Bardem, who plays Ruben, the owner of the team Pitt's character Sonny drives for.
The cast also includes Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Sarah Niles, Kim Bodnia, and Samson Kayo.
In his chat with Jimmy Fallon, Bardem described Pitt as "sweet" and "funny," and praised him for "driving an F1 car for real" on the set of their movie.
"180 miles per hour, on all those car racetracks, and producing. So many things he had to deal with," added the Being the Ricardos star. "And he was always taking care of all of us and making sure that we got everything we needed."
Bardem went on to say that Pitt spent time "giving us, the rest of the actors, the material to shine and putting himself on the back [burner]. It was amazing."
"And when we were working on shooting the scenes, the relation(ship) just happened [between us]," he continued. "Because it's so easy to work with him. He's one of the greatest."
Pitt recently opened up about his experience making F1 during a press conference in Mexico City on June 10, including how a racing film has been on his mind for some time.
"For me, it was just a no-brainer when [Kosinski, 51] had this audacious plan to embed us in the racing season, to put us actually in the cars," Pitt said of starring in the sports drama. "It was just a dream come true."
